Have you ever wondered what life would be like if we could know what’s going to happen next? What if I told
you God actually gives us that ability and it’s called eternity.
It’s true, we cannot see the exact thing that will happen to us in the next few minutes of our lives. No matter
how much we try to control, there will ultimately be moments of our life that will leave us out of control. But
God still plants the future in our hearts and wants us to know what is coming.
“Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even
so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11NLT
Did you read that? “God has planted eternity in the human heart.” There is a longing that each of us has for a
future, a hope for something to come. Yet we “cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to
end.”
I believe the later half of that verse is what stops us in our tracks. We want a future but we also seek comfort,
control and security. There are many times we chose these attributes rather than God’s future.
However, God gives us the option to live in the future right now. It’s called eternity. And it comes through His
one and only Son Jesus Christ.
Eternity is from everlasting to everlasting. It is the perfect union between creator and creation. No more tears,
no more pain, God’s home among His people, they will be His and He will be with them.
This promise does not have to be a future reality alone. It is one that can be lived right here today. Yes, we can
live in the “already/not yet” of God’s eternal home for us. How is this possible?
It begins with first acknowledging God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as your Lord. “If you openly declare
that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by
believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are
saved.” Romans 10:9-10 NLT
We then live out faith and our eternal promise in the ways that glorify God. Listen to the apostle Paul give his
explanation of living the “already/not yet”. “For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I
will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ,
whether I live or die. For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.”
Philippians 1:20-21 NLT
He goes on to say to the effect that being with Jesus is far better than being here. But in his time here, he is
going to live for Jesus and share the good news of salvation with everyone.
For us today we are given the future promise. The hope of the Lord for our souls. This reality for us is called
eternity. And it can be lived boldly today. Knowing that no matter what today brings we know who holds the
day and the future.
So will you join me in placing our hope in the Lord?
God Bless you and Keep You,
Pastor Andrew Happ
